Matt Smith
Matt Smith (14 October 1982) is a former Australian National Team central defender who plays for Thai Premier League Bangkok Glass F.C.


Born in Chichester, England, Smith started his career playing University football in England, where he represented several different Universities before being signed by Championship club Portsmouth.
Smith moved to Australia for one year in 2004 and returned in 2006, during which time he attended Hartpury College in Gloucestershire and completed his Masters degree in Sports Management. He also captained the Hartpury senior side to the BUSA National Championship in 2007.
In the same year he moved to Australia and played for Palm Beach before moving to Brisbane Strikers in the Queensland State League, winning the Premiership in 2009.
He signed his first A-League contract as on an injury replacement loan at North Queensland Fury in 2009 before receiving a permanent deal.
Brisbane Roar
On 16 April 2010 it was announced that Smith joined the Brisbane Roar on a two-year deal after his contract with North Queensland expired due to the club folding.
On 6 September 2011, the Roar announced that Smith would replace departed midfielder Matt McKay as captain of the club. On 10 September 2012, Smith signed a new 3-year contract at the Roar, extending his stay until the end of the 2015/16 season.
Smith has won 3 A-League Championships with Brisbane Roar, two of those as captain for the 2013/14 2011/12 seasons, the other in 2010/11.
Matt Smith has also won two A-League Team of the Season Awards, in 2010/11 and most recently the 2013/14 season.
His leadership, determination and consistency have won Smith many admirers and plaudits.

Bangkok Glass
In December 2014, Matt Smith transferred to Bangkok Glass FC for an undisclosed fee from Brisbane Roar.
Smith began his Bangkok Glass career in scintillating form, scoring late winning goals in consecutive games to steer his team to second on the table at the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers break.
Smith established himself as one of the best defenders in the league and finished the season with 38 appearances and 4 goals.
Smith was appointed club captain in Januray 2015, the first time a foreign player has ever been bestowed that honour in Bangkok Glass history.
International Career
Matt Smith was rewarded for his performances for Brisbane Roar, winning 3 caps for Australia in 2012 at the East Asian Games.
